Salalah is the second largest city in Oman, and the largest city in the Dhofar Provence. The city has a comparatively large emigrant community, primarily from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Almost all of the Salalah population is Muslim. Similar to the most of the Middle East, most people in Salalah practice the Sunni sect of Islam. There is also a minor population of Christians, Hindus and Sikhs practiced by the Indian and Sri Lankan community.

The city of Salalah is an attractive tourism site due to the natural appeal of the nearby mountains and trees with mountains. Around the city and into the mountains the countryside is flourishing and green during the monsoon period with the vegetation supporting herds of cattle. The climate supports wildlife often associated with East Africa, for example leopards and hyenas. Also plants related with Africa, such as the Baobab tree, are widespread. Salalah and its surroundings is one of the few earliest areas on the Arabian Peninsula that have wide coconut cultivation.
